Q: Can I ever have pizza, bread, muffins, and cake again?

A: You can have gluten free pizza, bread, and cake now, but it will have to be made with ingredients that do not contain gluten. Many grocery stores now offer pre-made gluten free breads, pizza, and mixes that will allow you to make your own yummy favorite foods at home.

Q: What if I accidentally eat something that I’m not supposed to?

A: It’s important for your health that you are careful, but there are going to be times when you eat something unsafe, even though you are trying really hard. Accidents happen. You may get a little sick, or you may not have any symptoms until much later. Do the best you can, and you will only get better and better.

Q: What should I tell my friends and teachers?

A: Explain to them about gluten and how it affects your health. Give them a link to this website or to the links listed on the Kids' Sites page. Write down a list of your safe and unsafe foods and give it to them, but don't expect everyone to understand at first. Many people will not, so it is your responsibility to make sure you manage your health and your diet.

Q: How will I know if food prepared by others is safe?

A: You won’t always know, but learn to ask if it was prepared with any ingredients that you know are unsafe, but that they might not realize contain gluten. If you are not sure, pack your own snacks and food. When not eating at home, learn to choose raw fruits, plain rice, fresh vegetables, corn chips, and other simple foods that most likely do not have hidden ingredients that might contain gluten.
